In the CropHype project, an international consortium of experts from science, industry, and technology is working to significantly improve the detection of smallholder-grown crops in Kenya using hyperspectral EnMAP data and Sentinel-2 imagery. The goal is to enable reliable yield forecasts and thereby strengthen food security for smallholder farmers in East Africa.
My contribution to this project primarily involved the preparation and submission of the funding proposal to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), coordination among the various project partners (Philipps University of Marburg, Geo Engine GmbH, and agriBORA GmbH), as well as the development of semi-automated processes for collecting crop data in Kenya, including on-site testing.
Through this work, I have made a key contribution to ensuring that innovative satellite technology can be directly applied in practice — particularly for yield forecasting in smallholder agriculture.
